Frustrated and tired

I have just spent 5 hours reading a 28 page essay, and my understanding of it can be summed up in about 4 sentences. Is this normal? Am I missing a chunk of brain labeled "formal reasoning ability"? I had looked forward to this class, but lately I just feel like I'm wasting my time. It's ridiculously unrewarding.
